The tradition of “Törggelen”
In autumn, South Tyrol celebrates “Törggelen”. A hike through the golden landscape and a stop at the local farms is well worth it. Typical dishes such as roasted chestnuts and new wine are served in a warm and friendly atmosphere. A more modern version of this tradition is the "Eisacktaler Kost", which take place from mid-October to mid-November. Various restaurants offer culinary autumn delights prepared with chestnuts: chestnuts are refined into creamy purée, roasted, boiled, or made into a delicious soup – ultimately, they are always a treat.
Our tip: A hike along the “Keschtnweg” (chestnut trail) takes you from Brixen to Klausen, through ancient chestnut trees and vineyards.

The cows return from the huts
Farmers, shepherds, cattle, sheep, and goats make their way back down from the alpine meadows to Vals. From far away, you can hear the ringing of the bells as the animals are led down the mountain. The cows in particular are carefully decorated with festive flowers to ward off evil spirits. In Vals, they are welcomed with traditional folk music, traditional dishes, and regional specialties. You should not miss it.

Traditions in Val Pusteria
In Val Pusteria, you will meet traditions at every corner. The agricultural is still alive and deeply anchored today. This includes the old handicrafts, religious ceremonies, and, of course, the culinary specialties of the region. In October, the traditional bread and strudel market takes place in Bressanone. Here, everything evolves around the daily bread. The nearby Loden Museum in Vintl also tells the story of tradition. Those interested in alpinism and mountains will find a whole world at the Messner Mountain Museum on Kronplatz, which mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner has staged around traditional mountaineering.

Autumn is the perfect time for exquisite wine tastings with South Tyrolean winemakers. A trip along the "Südtiroler Weinstraße" is also a must for wine lovers. The picturesque area leads from Nals to Salurn, through vineyards, historic estates, and a total of 16 villages, all with their own individual charm and long wine tradition.
