The Visual Journey:

From Valsegg to the Wildensee Lake

6 photo hotspots for your holiday stories

Some hikes are taken for the physical challenge. This one is also for the eyes – and for capturing images that, even months later, evoke that very special holiday feeling. We are taking you on one of South Tyrol’s most beautiful hiking tours. It starts right outside your chalet and leads up into the high-alpine scenery of the Pfunderer Mountains. We have curated six of the most spectacular photo hotspots: places that impress with their light, colors, and untouched nature – completely unfiltered.

Hotspot 1: Forest Bathing at Dawn

The first fascinating moment of the day awaits before you have even laced up your hiking boots. Early in the morning, when the cool mountain air meets the warm water of our infinity pool, a gentle veil of mist rises above the surface. As the first rays of sunlight break through the trees and color the water, it forms the perfect, peaceful opening scene for your holiday story.

Hotspot 2: The Timeless Idyll of Fane Alm

Starting from Valsegg, you can comfortably ride an e-bike down the valley to the end of the glen and upwards. Here the valley opens up, placing you right in the middle of South Tyrol’s oldest alpine village. The roughly 30 sun-scorched, deep-black wooden huts, small barns, and chapel look like a perfectly arranged film set. Use the rustic, dark wood as a background for a portrait – the texture of the centuries-old timber looks amazingly high-end in photographs.

Hotspot 3: Looking Down into the Valler Schramme Gorge

Directly behind the huts of Fane Alm, follow trail No. 17 further uphill on foot. Just a few minutes past the peaceful alpine village, nature reveals its wild side. The Valler Schramme is a deep, untamed rock gorge through which white mountain water rushes. Photographed from above, you can best capture the sheer power of the wild waterfall. The autumn light creates a fantastic contrast with the dark rock.

Hotspot 4: Alpine Expanse & Marmot Idyll at Labesebenalm

Now continue uphill across open slopes to the wide mountain basin over 2,100 meters above sea level. Up here, the landscape changes, becoming gentler, more minimalist, and open. Our tip: Pause for a moment and listen closely. The vast grassy slopes surrounding the alpine pasture are the domain of countless marmots, whose shrill warning whistles can often be heard from afar. If you take a quiet moment, you might catch the perfect photo of one of these little alpine inhabitants basking photogenically on the rocks.

Hotspot 5: The deep blue eye – the Wildensee Lake

The final, steeper climb leads into the high-alpine zone at an impressive 2,530 meters: the highlight of the tour. The Wildensee Lake is the deepest mountain lake in South Tyrol and an absolutely majestic sight. Nestled in a rugged rock landscape, the water's surface shifts from a vivid indigo to a deep, mirror-smooth black depending on the position of the sun and clouds. A photo taken directly from the shoreline captures a sense of solitude and peace that is guaranteed to amaze your Instagram community.

Hotspot 6: The panorama at Rauhtaljoch & the Brixner Hut

From the lake, ascend to Rauhtaljoch (2,800 m) – the highest point of the tour. From here, descend toward the Brixner Hut and back to Fane Alm. At the ridge, a fascinating, almost moonlike mountain world awaits. Majestic chamois can regularly be spotted on the steep slopes. As you descend, the view opens up to the Brixner Hütte, standing alone in the midst of nature: an image that perfectly captures the classic longing for the mountains. After a rest on the hut’s terrace, head back down to the valley, where the warm fireplace at Valsegg awaits you in the evening.

5 FAQs for your hiking guide

The tour is rated as moderate to difficult. While the path up to Fane Alm is relaxed, the ascent to the Wildensee Lake at 2,530 meters requires good physical fitness and sure-footedness. Behind Labesebenalm, a short section secured with steel cables also awaits.

The full tour to the Wildensee Lake is not suitable for small children or strollers. However, the first section from Valsegg to the Fane Alm alpine village makes for an ideal, family-friendly hike. The high-alpine route to the lake is recommended only for older, experienced child hikers who are completely sure-footed.

Since the centerpiece of the hike lies in the high-alpine zone above 2,500 meters, ankle-high hiking boots with good tread, weatherproof clothing (layering system), sun and rain protection, sufficient provisions, and trekking poles are required. You can pre-order trekking poles and a packed lunch at our reception.

The pure ascent from Fane Alm to the Wildensee Lake takes about 2.5 hours. For the full route starting from Valsegg (including the return journey as a loop tour), you should plan for a pure walking time of around 5.5 to 6 hours – photo stops not included.

Yes, in the Fane Alm village there are rustic huts serving food and drinks. Labesebenalm is also located directly along the way. At the Wildensee Lake itself, there are no catering facilities. For a well-deserved rest by the lake shore, it is best to pack your own snack and plenty to drink. The Brixner Hut is also a great choice for a meal after the descent.
